How to get Public Chauffeur License?

The applicant should meet following requirements to get the

  • Possesses a valid driver’s license for at least one year;
  • is at least 21 years of age;
  • has successfully completed a licensing examination as prescribed by the Commissioner;
  • does not owe debt to the City of Chicago
  • is not delinquent in child support
  • has not been convicted, found liable, placed on supervision or any similar deferral program, or subject to conditional discharge for three or more traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles of any kind in any jurisdiction:
    • for new license applicants, within a 12-month period preceding the application; or
    • for renewal license applicants, within a 12-month time frame during the applicant’s last license term;
  • has not had a previous public chauffeur license application denied within the 12-month period preceding the date of application;
  • has not had a previously issued public chauffeur license revoked within the 3-year period preceding the date of application;
  • has not had a previously issued public chauffeur license rescinded under Section 9-104-080 within the 3-year period preceding the date of application;
  • has not had his driver’s license cancelled, suspended or revoked by any governing jurisdiction as a result of non-moving violations in the 12-month period preceding the date of application, excluding (i) license suspensions due to failure to comply with child support or debt payment obligation; (ii) failure to maintain automobile insurance on a personal vehicle; or (iii) failure to appear in traffic court;
  • has not had his driver’s license cancelled, suspended or revoked by any governing jurisdiction as a result of a driving-related incident within the 12-month period preceding the date of application; and
  • has not, within the 5-year period preceding the date of application, been convicted by a court

Types of TLC Vehicle Licenses

TLC issues following type of vehicle license:-

  • Yellow Taxicabs: Yellow taxi cabs are yellow vehicles which can pick up passengers anywhere in New York City. Yellow cab vehicle owners must either own or lease a Yellow Taxicab Medallion.   • For-Hire Vehicles (FHVs) : For-Hire Vehicles provide pre-arranged service anywhere in New York City and are dispatched by TLC-licensed FHV bases.
  • Green Cabs: Green cabs or Street-Hail Liveries (SHLs) are For-Hire Vehicles that are permitted to accept street-hails. In exchange, Street-Hail Liveries may not operate in the Hail Exclusionary Zone, south of West 110th St and East 96th St.
  • Commuter Vans: Commuter vans are vehicles that transport between 9 and 20 passengers in preapproved zones for a flat rate. Commuter vans are operated by Commuter Van Authorities.
  • Paratransit Vehicles License: Paratransit vehicles provide non-emergency transportation for passengers with disabilities.

How to get a TLC Driver License ?

The TLC driver license is required to drive for hire in New York City. Basic requirements to apply for a driver license are as under:

  • Minimum age: 19
  • Have a Valid DMV Chauffer’s license- Class A, B, C, or E
  • Must have a valid Social Security Number
  • No fines or fees owed to NYS DMV or TLC
